Blue Ridge Conference

Going to the Mountain

The Blue Ridge Conference on Leadership is less than a month away. Are you going?

If you have not planned to do so, I would encourage you to look at this year’s schedule and consider spending three days in the lovely mountains of Western North Carolina. Even better, take some of your team members with you. Effective leaders know that an important leadership quality is the ability and willingness to develop those they lead. A leader knows each person’s level of ambition, seeks opportunities to set goals for team members and helps them to reach their goals.

Development means two things: helping employees stay relevant in their current jobs and preparing them for future career growth.  As a leader, your role in your team’s development is to set clear expectations for your team, help team members identify new opportunities for growth and maintain an ongoing dialogue about where they are, where they’d like to go and how they’re going to get there throughout the year – not just at performance review time!

An effective way of keeping your leaders current in their jobs is to coach them and to provide them with growth opportunities, such as new projects, challenging goals and the chance to attend development events such as the Blue Ridge Conference on Leadership. Successfully coaching your team members is perhaps your most important role as a leader.

If you are going to the conference, you’ll have the opportunity to not only meet fellow leaders from different industries and regions and hear from extraordinary speakers on how to become a more effective leader, but also you will have time to think about your own leadership challenges and appreciate the lovely setting – the Blue Ridge mountains are truly magnificent that time of the year. If you are bringing team members, don’t miss out on a great team building opportunity. If you have not yet decided, what are you waiting for?

I’ll see you on the mountain!
