A New Year's resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other.

THE VIEW FROM THE MOUNTAIN

The New Year is here and I’m sure that you have made resolutions. And, like this quote from a famous “nobody”, they probably won’t last long. No matter what you have resolved to do, my encouragement for you is: Focus your life on looking forward and don’t get caught up in looking backward. The past is gone. It will never come again. However, what lies ahead is possibility and opportunity if you choose to see them.

Now, the choice to focus on possibility and opportunity is often easier said than done. Here is how I do it. When I drive my car, I remind myself that I use the windshield to look forward in driving and not the rearview mirror, which is 10 times as small. Whenever I use public transportation, I choose to sit forward, instead of backwards or sideways. When I do this I tell myself, I am going forward in life, looking for opportunity and possibility and I am not focusing on the past. Try this for several weeks and you will be surprised how it can change your attitude when you are in a bad mood or when you are dwelling on something from the past. Your whole outlook on life will change if you focus on what lies ahead instead of what happened in the past.

Believe me, there will be plenty of reminders of your past from friends, family or events. But, the New Year’s brings the opportunity to let your forward thinking mindset change how you view life and even yourself. As Ellen Goodman once said, “We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential.”

Blessings to you in the New Year!
